Battery-Room Area Cannot Be Sized While Installed kWh Spans Fourfold

While the battery energy requirement spans a factor of four, any single battery-room area is a selection, not a result.

Equipment plan of the building: generator and transformer yard, UPS and battery rows, and CDU positions along the hall
Whole-equipment plan: generator yard, power rows and CDU positions (coordination study — not release).

Ask for the battery-room area and the space chapter will not give you one. The refusal is written down, with the reason: three inputs are unknown and the energy already spans four, so any range published as a result would be a placeholder wearing the clothes of an estimate. Nobody has thrown either of two switches. Between them they multiply the installed battery energy by four.

Usable Depth and Autonomy Span Installed Energy Fourfold

The first switch is usable depth of discharge. The five-minute figure of 2,379 kWh is the nameplate lower bound at usable depth 1.00 — the original formula, with no additional depth limit [MODELED]. It is not installed energy. Installed energy is nameplate divided by the usable depth, and no supplier has returned that depth. At 0.80 the whole-site installed energy is 2,974 kWh [MODELED]; on the high-rate branch at 0.50 it is 4,759 kWh [MODELED].

The second switch is autonomy: five minutes against ten. It doubles whatever the first returns. Nobody has asked for ten minutes. The item exists because the worst-case generator starting chain is not closed. If that chain lands on a preheat or a cold start, the five-minute nameplate itself becomes 4,759 kWh before depth is applied. That digit is the doubled nameplate, not the 0.50-depth installed row; the two share a number and not an identity.

The defensible envelope is therefore 2,379 to 9,518 kWh [SENSITIVITY]. The space chapter states plainly that until the chemistry and the worst-case generator starting chain close, the room area is physically incapable of converging.

Neither switch is a tolerance. Chemistry is an either-or the owner and the battery supplier owe in writing. Autonomy is an either-or that follows from a starting chain nobody has closed. The floor is not settled either. An independent reviewer accepted the coefficient chain behind the 2,379 kWh as reproducible while recording the chemistry, the usable depth and the starting chain as undetermined. The verdict written against it is that the formula is accepted and the capacity remains to be proved. Freezing that figure as final is prohibited by name in the same document, alongside a prohibition on writing a conditionally satisfied autonomy as a satisfied one.

Catalogue Areal Density Is the Wrong Number for This Duty

Each of the three sets discharges 6,355.5 kW from a 793 kWh nameplate [MODELED]. That is about 8 C on the nameplate and 12 C if five minutes is read as a full discharge [MODELED]. This plant's battery is a high-rate, short-duration duty. It is not a peaking store at 0.5 C or 1 C.

Areal energy density must be written for that duty. A catalogue density taken at 0.5 C or 1 C is the wrong number, and the chapter forbids filling the cell with it. Once a project-specific density arrives, area is strictly inverse: halve the density and the area doubles [MODELED]. Nothing absorbs any of the four-fold energy span on the way through.

Areal density is itself unknown within each chemistry branch by a factor of two and a half to three. The merged room envelope therefore runs 44 to 1,190 m² — a span of twenty-seven, attributed as three to four times from chemistry, two from autonomy and the rest from within-branch uncertainty [SENSITIVITY]. On the worst branch the battery room alone exceeds the whole white-space upper envelope of 916 m² [MODELED] and becomes the second largest indoor item after the electrical core. In the three bound columns it is 4.6, 6.7 and 21.4 per cent of net indoor area [MODELED].

The structural basis adds a warning the area table cannot see. Battery mass span is larger than the twenty-seven-fold area span, because lead-acid and lithium differ in mass per kilowatt-hour as well as in footprint. The white-space floor-load target is not an upper bound for this room.

A Published Range Would Be a Placeholder, Not an Estimate

A battery-room area, single value or range, appears in the list of things the chapter explicitly declines to output. A later section then prints E4 research bands for site blanking only. Those bands are banned from investment, from a bill of materials, from structural loads and from freeze files. The two acts are not a contradiction. One refuses a result. The other reserves a shrinkable blank so the building outline is not drawn around a median that corresponds to no scheme.

That refusal had to survive contact with a summary table needing a number in every cell. Rather than take the midpoint of a twenty-seven-fold envelope, each column was bound to a named branch carrying its own printed refutation condition:

  • lithium at five minutes with the highest assumed areal density and a usable depth of 0.90, giving 56 m², refuted if the chemistry lands on lead-acid or the autonomy doubles;
  • the same chemistry and autonomy at the lowest assumed density and a depth of 0.80, giving 179 m², refuted by the same two events;
  • lead-acid at ten minutes with the lowest density and a depth of 0.50, giving 1,280 m², which is the worst combination available and is refuted by nothing [SENSITIVITY].

Three numbers, each separately killable, and none of them an average of the others. The conservative blank on the site plan follows the third column, about 1,200 to 1,280 m² [SENSITIVITY], marked shrinkable. Area can contract later. The building outline and the floor structure cannot expand.

Limits and open items

Confirmed: the chapter refuses to output a battery-room area as a result; nameplate energy is a lower bound, not installed energy; area cannot converge until chemistry and the worst-case generator starting chain close; a median over discrete branches is not a technical scheme. [FACT]

Modelled and unfrozen: 2,379 kWh as the five-minute nameplate floor at usable depth 1.00; 2,974 kWh installed at 0.80; 4,759 kWh installed at usable depth 0.50; 4,759 kWh as the ten-minute nameplate before depth, a different identity; 6,355.5 kW per set against 793 kWh; the 8 C and 12 C rates; 4.6 / 6.7 / 21.4 per cent of net indoor area; the comparison with 916 m² of white space. The 2,379 kWh figure remains a research lower bound whose coefficient chain is unfrozen. [MODELED]

The 2,379 to 9,518 kWh envelope, the 44 to 1,190 m² merge, and the 56 / 179 / 1,280 m² bound columns are sensitivities. None is a room size. [SENSITIVITY]

Open: chemistry and usable depth, owed by the owner and the battery supplier in writing; the worst-case generator starting time that sets five minutes or ten; a fire-authority ruling on single-compartment energy limit and test-level classification; UL 9540A coverage at the installation tier. Whoever closes the chemistry closes three to four times of the twenty-seven. Until that letter arrives, every area drawn for this room is a reservation and must be labelled as one. [HOLD]

Nothing here has been reviewed or sealed by an Engineer of Record. Nothing releases a battery quantity or a room area for purchase.

The Letter Must Name Chemistry, Usable Depth, and C-Rate

The question "what is the battery-room area" is not a planning question until two discrete determinations exist. The owner can ask the architect for a reservation. The architect cannot be asked for a result. The letter that would make the result legal names the chemistry, the five-minute usable depth, and the C-rate the density was written at.
